These magnets are fully encapsulated in a robust layer of plastic (typically ABS or Polypropylene) through an over-molding process. Unlike plating, which is microns thick, this coating is a substantial physical shell that renders the magnet completely waterproof and highly resistant to impact damage.
The primary advantage of plastic coating is breakage resistance. Neodymium is naturally brittle, but the plastic casing absorbs shocks and prevents chipping or cracking if the magnets collide. Furthermore, because the magnet is hermetically sealed inside the plastic, it is immune to corrosion, making it perfect for submerged applications. The plastic also provides a barrier preventing direct contact with the magnet material, which is beneficial for clean-room or aquarium environments.
